Vote Mama Foundation seeks a strategic and driven communications leader to join our growing team. The Senior Director of Communications will refine, execute, and oversee a comprehensive communications strategy that promotes the Foundation’s nonpartisan research, education, and advocacy efforts. This is an exciting opportunity to shape national conversations, elevate the Foundation’s profile, and engage a broad coalition of stakeholders, including researchers, policymakers, and nonprofit leaders.


Success in this role requires exceptional strategic thinking, the ability to translate complex research into accessible and compelling messaging, and the capacity to manage multiple high-visibility projects. The ideal candidate has extraordinary attention to detail, strong project management skills, and experience navigating the communications needs of mission-driven organizations.


The Senior Director of Communications reports to the CEO and Founder of Vote Mama Foundation and collaborates closely with the Foundation’s leadership team. Initially, this role will focus on leading communications consultants and an in-house media relations manager. Over time, the individual will help build a full communications team, including digital communications experts and content creators.

Through robust research, education, and advocacy, Vote Mama Foundation works to create a more equitable system that empowers parents and families across the country.


Required skills for this role:
  • 8+ years experience in communications strategy, public relations, or political communications, including supervisory roles.

  • Proven ability to curate and produce multimedia content, including video editing, reel development, and other engaging formats for social media.

  • Proven expertise in media relations, including securing press coverage, developing key messaging, and managing crisis communications.

  • Experience managing digital communications platforms, including social media management (Instagram & LinkedIn), overseeing web development, and collaborating with team members from other departments on email programs.

  • Proven leadership and team management skills, including cross-functional and creative team collaboration.

  • Strong understanding of the U.S. political landscape, including campaign communications and grassroots advocacy.

  • Strategic thinker with exceptional project management skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to establish and cultivate relationships with influencers, partners, and stakeholders.

  • Previous experience working in political organizations, campaigns, or related advocacy groups.

  • Demonstrated success in managing large-scale, multi-channel campaigns.

  • Commitment to Vote Mama’s goals and theory of change, passion for grassroots organizing, and commitment to progressive policy change, as well as deep dedication to the mission.

  • Creative, strategic, collaborative, and organized, with keen attention to detail.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including expertise in developing impactful long-form and short-form content, social media storytelling, and strategic messaging.

  • Ability to work independently and to exercise sound judgment and discretion.

  • Master’s degree in Communications, Nonprofit Management, Marketing, or a related field.

Core Responsibilities:

Strategy Development

  

  • Lead the execution of Vote Mama’s overarching communications strategy, expanding Vote Mama’s impact year after year.

  • Collaborate closely with the leadership team to achieve Vote Mama’s mission and annual goals.

    Serve as a thought partner to the Founder and CEO, generating and exploring innovative ideas to propel the organization forward.

  • Utilize a strong understanding of the U.S. political and policy landscape to drive messaging, media, and outreach strategies that translate complex policy initiatives into compelling, accessible content for diverse audiences.


Organizational Leadership

  • Work closely with leadership and the operations team to recruit and help onboard a complete communications department to lead the digital and media relations work.

  • Lead a diverse team across digital communications, press, social media, email campaigns, and web development, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and objectives.

  • Supervise the media relations manager and digital communications consultants to ultimately build and lead a fully in-house communications team.


Strategy Execution  

  • Provide ongoing support and strategic thinking to other Vote Mama teams in their communications needs and priorities.

  • Oversee press outreach, media coverage, branding strategy, and influencer engagement to amplify Vote Mama’s visibility.

  • Oversee the development of social media content, press releases, and email campaigns focusing on LinkedIn and Instagram.

  • Manage and strengthen relationships with influencers, partners, and key stakeholders, aligning external voices with Vote Mama’s goals.

  • Establish metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of communications and social initiatives.

  • Work closely with the Founder & CEO to develop and promote thought leadership content that elevates her profile and strengthens Vote Mama’s influence.

  • Secure speaking engagements, media opportunities, and partnerships that expand Vote Mama’s reach.


Thought Leadership and Brand Building  

  • Develop and implement strategies to position Vote Mama and its Founder and CEO as a thought leader in a range of topics including equitable family policies, democratic systems reform, and the economic impact of inclusive representation.

  • Create and amplify high-quality multimedia content (Instagram), including op-eds, blog posts, LinkedIn articles, and video reels to drive visibility and engagement.

  • Leverage speaking engagements, partnerships, and media appearances to enhance organizational reach and credibility.

  • Align messaging and campaigns with Vote Mama’s mission, ensuring a cohesive narrative that resonates with diverse audiences and stakeholders.


Working at Vote Mama Foundation:

This remote position requires consistent internet access at your home office location. It also requires travel for in-person events as needed. We are not offering U.S. visa sponsorship for this role. Candidates in the EST and CST time zones are strongly preferred.


Compensation: 

$130,000-$150,000
